Swadlincote Surgery has issued a warning after a number of instances of staff being verbally abused.

The surgery says that, in some cases, police action could be used.

A video clip posted on social media shows Doctor Betteridge-Sorby, from the Swadlincote practice, explaining that people will face the consequences if there is any repeat - especially during a second lockdown NHS resources are being stretched.

Doctor Betteridge-Sorby says: "As we approach a second national lockdown, we want all of our patients at Swadlincote Surgery to be assured we are working as hard as possible to try and meet the clinical needs in a way that is safe for you and our members of staff.

"Sadly, in recent weeks, we have seen an increase in the number of incidents of verbal abuse directed against members of staff, our reception team and clinical members of staff.

"As GP partners, we have a duty of care to provide a safe clinicial working environment for our patients and employees.

"Where we feel a patient's behaviour has breached our ability to ensure that safe environment, we reserve the right to follow a policy of action which can include written warnings, removal from our practice list or police acton where necessary.

"On a more positive note, we have been grateful for the understanding and message of support we have received, and continue to receive, from the vast majority of our patients at what we recognise is a very difficult time for everyone.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding, stay safe."
