A Newhall pub could be stripped of its licence due to the risk of "continued crime and disorder" and repeated after-hours alcohol sales.

South Derbyshire District Council is to review the licence of the Royal Oak pub, in High Street, where local champion boxer Jack Bodell first got into boxing, after concerns were raised by police.

A hearing will now be held to assess the police's evidence and councillors on the licensing panel could choose to strip the pub, of its licences, add further restrictions or take no action.

A public notice, advertising the licence review, has been published on the council website and attached to a lamppost outside the pub.

It says: "The chief officer of police has lost confidence that this premises can be run in a safe and crime free manner which promotes the four licensing objectives for the following reasons:

"Poor management and supervision from the premises licence holder and designated premises supervisor.

"The premises licence holder has previously sold alcohol after the permitted hours in 2017 and is again allowing the sale of alcohol past the permitted hours.

"Concerns over the premises licence holder's behaviour reenforcing the risk to continued crime and disorder at the premises."

The pub will be able to defend itself during the hearing.

It was approached for comment by the Local Democracy Reporting Service but could not be reached.

A resident near the site, who did not wish to be named, said the pub had a "bit of a reputation", which used to be worse but still remained.

She said the pub was a popular watering hole for footballers playing for the pub's team.

A Derbyshire police spokesperson said: "The review is in relation to unlicensed activity.

"There is an ongoing criminal investigation currently underway in relation to this, therefore we are unable to provide further detail."
