Police say that a driver was 'lucky not to be impaled' after coming off the road on a main Swadlincote route.

An Audi crashed through metal railings on William Nadin Way and ended up in the compound on the other side.

Police say the motorist was lucky to escape the smash as it was clear that his seatbelt had 'never been worn'.

A social media post by Swadlincote's Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "Officers came across a Silver Audi that had been driven into high metal perimeter railings hard enough to cause them to buckle and the vehicle to travel out the other side into the compound.

"The driver was very lucky he was not impaled.

"Driver reported for due care and no seatbelt, it was clipped behind the seat, clearly never worn. You cannot blame this on the icy conditions!"
