A 12-year-old Woodville schoolgirl sang on national television on Monday morning.

And that is despite being so shy she will not even sing in front of her own family.

Elle Bambridge, a Year Seven pupil at the Granville Academy, was spotted online by a producer for This Morning.

And Elle was interviewed on the show, with mum Simmone, by hosts Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield as part of their Lockdown Legends

Elle, who also attends the Dance and Music Centre School In Swadlincote, sang Rise Up - by American singer Andra Day - a song that was picked up by the Believe in Rainbows Facebook page and was incredibly well received.

But a spot on ITV was totally unexpected. This Morning's producer got in touch last Thursday - and Elle was singing to the nation the following Monday.

Simmone was not surprised by her daughter's voice - but adds that Elle's shyness hides a singing ability beyond her years.

She explained how the song came to be online.

"It all happened really quickly, Elle sang the song and I thought: 'That's really lovely', and it made me smile and made me feel better," said Simmone.

"I shared it to my Facebook page to see what people's reactions were.

"Then I shared it to another Facebook page called Believe in Rainbows. And that's all about children.

"And it did really well, it got a load of likes and views, but the comments on it really touched me.

"People said it lifted their spirits and thanked Elle for the song. Some said it made the day better and another person said they'd lost someone and it said that the words meant a lot, and that she should sing again.

"Then suddenly I got a message from the producer of ITV's This Morning and I thought 'Crikey!'

"He said he'd seen Elle's video on Believe in Rainbows and he said he'd been told to take a look at it by someone and he said he thought she was amazing and would love to get her on the show. And it went from there. We didn't have that much time to think about it."

But Simmone explained that singing was nothing new to her daughter.

"She's always loved singing from when she was about four years old," she explained.

"But she was in a choir at her last school, Woodville Junior, and she had an amazing teacher called Mrs Haywood who was incredible with her.

"She always used to say: 'She's going to be a little superstar' and tried to get her to sing on stage and get her confidence up.

"But Elle's always been shy - and she still won't sing in front of the family now!

"Then she moved to the Granville so I decided to get her some private singing music lessons at the Dance and Music Centre in Swadlincote.

"She belts out songs with Nikita Robinson at the Centre and won their singing competition. And that was the first time her granddad had heard her sing because she wouldn't sing in front of us!

"We all got goosebumps and she got a standing ovation.

"One of the judges was Kirby Frost who's been on The Voice.

"But Nikita has been really supportive and always tells Elle to believe in herself."

The Coronavirus pandemic meant the This Morning interview was conducted on Skype.

"It was all new to us, we had to download the Skype app, and at 12noon there was Phil and Holly talking to us," added Simmone.

"We didn't apply to go on the show as Elle was 'found'. We didn't know anything about it.

"There were three acts, another lady was doing tricks with dogs, the other one displayed artwork.

"But Phil and Holly said 'Take it away Elle' and she sang a small snippet of the song live on TV - and she held it together well.

"It was massive considering she won't even sing in front of the family."

The Granville Academy posted a message on their Facebook page which read: 'We are so proud of Elle Bambridge, Y7, who appeared on This Morning with Holly and Phillip today.

"After seeing Elle singing 'Rise Up' on a FB group, a producer invited her on the programme as a lockdown legend to sing her song and discuss what she has been doing during lockdown.

"I'm sure you will all agree that Elle has an amazing voice! We are very honoured to be able to share this video of Elle singing. Truly amazing!"

And Nikita said on Facebook: 'My amazing student. Well done Elle. So proud of you!!!'
