An Overseal-based South Derbyshire councillor filmed drinking a glass of wine while sitting in the driver's seat of a car with the engine running has been labelled as "stupid" and "irresponsible".

Cllr Andrew Brady, who represents the Seales ward on South Derbyshire District Council, is the representative filmed in the video.

The video was sent to the Local Democracy Reporting Service anonymously.

In the video, Cllr Brady, a Conservative, can be seen sitting in the driver's seat of what appears to be a vintage car and the sound of the engine running can be heard.

Cllr Brady then says "a blast for Boris" and then honks the car's horn before saying "and a glass of wine for me" before drinking from the wine glass.

The video is believed to have been filmed on Wednesday, April 8, but has only now come to light.

When the LDRS approached Cllr Brady for comment he said: "I've no idea what you're talking about," but said: "You can send it if you wish," when he was offered to be sent the video.

Cllr Brady, who was elected in 2019, later responded to say: "No real comment, private land, my own time".

It is not illegal to drink alcohol while at the wheel of a car but there is a limit to how much alcohol can be consumed before driving becomes illegal.

The drink drive limit in England is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

There is no suggestion the councillor was over the drink-drive limit.

Cllr Martyn Ford, leader of the Conservative-run South Derbyshire District Council, did not wish to comment on the video.

Meanwhile, Cllr Kevin Richard, leader of the council's opposition Labour group, said: "I trust he was not on the public highway, but even saying that, promoting drinking whilst in control of a motor vehicle is absolutely stupid, irresponsible and giving the wrong message to the public.

"Councillors are community leaders and should promote good governance and not display bad and irresponsible actions.

"It seems as though the elitist attitude of individuals in Westminster and their advisers have filtered down to some local elected members, one law for us and another for them.

"I sincerely hope this has not brought the council into disrepute and I do not condone his actions."

A Derbyshire Police spokesperson said: "Drink-driving is of course against the law but this video does not show any offences.

"It is not possible to tell from this clip whether the vehicle is on a road or other public place, nor is it possible to determine whether the person behind the wheel has been drinking to beyond the drink-drive limit."
