Teenage boy is arrested after death of Swadlincote 17-year-old who has been named by police

A teenage boy has been arrested by officers investigating the death of a 17-year-old, and the assault of a man in Swadlincote.

Benjamin Orton sadly died at the scene of the incident which happened on Saturday night (12 June), despite attempts by emergency crews to save him.

His family have kindly shared a photograph of Benjamin, which Derbyshire Constabulary have released today (Monday).

Officers were called to reports of an assault at an alleyway at the side of the Odeon cinema, in Coppice Side, just before 10.40pm.

A 20-year-old man was also found with serious, and potentially life changing injuries. He was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

The boy, who is from the Swadlincote area, was arrested yesterday evening and is in police custody.

A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesman said: "Officers are treating Benjamin's death as murder and are still appealing to the public to come forward with any information, dashcam or CCTV footage from the area.
