Swadlincote Police have warned social media users to check their facts before posting photos of suspicious behaviour.

They say one woman was subjected to online abuse after photos of her were published on community pages.

However, she was delivering business cards to local addresses.

Swadlincote Police's Safer Neighbourhood Team posted: "Recently, some community pages have posted some content that was untrue and has exposed people in a negative light for purely going about their daily business.

"We understand that you want to look out for one another's security and use these pages as a platform to share things that you believe to be suspicious behaviour etc.

"However, may we request that you know the full facts or information before posting images of people.

"Recently a lady was posted on Facebook community pages merely delivering some business cards.

"Some of the comments were abusive, personal and nasty which could affect someone's wellbeing, reputation and business.

"So, please thin: "Do I know the full facts and have I actually witnessed this person doing anything wrong?'.

"If not, think about your comments and think before sharing.

"If you do have concerns regarding a social media post or you have witnessed a suspicious incident please contact us via 101 or online so we can release any images ourselves."
