Swadlincote Police's Safer Neighbourhood team paid a visit to the 80-year-old man who was burgled earlier this week.
The intruder tried to steal a vintage motorcycle from the property in Greeson Close in the early hours of Monday, but was disturbed by a neighbour who raised the alarm.
Police arrived and wrestled the culprit to the floor before arresting him.

Officers have now visited the man, Alec, for a chat and to pass on some crime prevention tips as well as the offer of free security equipment.
Swadlincote Police reported their visit on their SNT Facebook page.
Their post said: "Swadlincote SNT visited 80-year Alec who was the unfortunate victim of the recent burglary.
"Sgt Nizzer and Pcso Edwards, had the pleasure of meeting Alec and his granddaughter Holly this morning (Thursday).
"They shared a few stories of how Alec left school, and spent all his working life working for one construction company which took him all around the world before retiring at 60.
"Alec was given a few crime prevention goodies and referred to South Derbyshire safer homes scheme who will fit further free security if needed.
"Alec's family who all live local were overwhelmed by the positive response for them in our post and wanted to thank you all.
"Alec wanted everyone to know he is fine and fighting fit with a thumbs up.
"Unfortunately, our local hero the neighbour who caught the offender had to go to work. We will catch him another time.
"As a community we all have duty to lookout for each other in these testing times. Stay home, stay local, stay safe."
