Swadlincote Police have been carrying out checks on drivers in Newhall - and say they will be back on a similar operation soon.

The Police and Derbyshire's Casualty Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST) issued 'multiple tickets' after checking on motorists driving without a seatbelt, driving on mobile phones and ensuring vehicles are in a safe and legal condition.

And while they admit they have had online comments such as 'Haven't you got anything better to do', they say it was a worthwhile exercise.

A post on the Swadlincote Safer Neighbourhood Facebook page said: "Today we joined our CREST team to complete a traffic operation in Newhall.

"The whole point of today was to interact and educate drivers on the dangers of driving without a seatbelt, driving on mobile phones and ensuring your vehicle is in a safe and legal condition.

"Looking at the comments on our local Facebook pages some people seem to think we have better things to be doing and we shouldn't be giving them a ticket as they are driving at their own risk!

"Multiple tickets have been issued and advice given to drivers this morning.

"We will be back soon in a different location!"
