A man has been charged with firearm and drugs offences after Swadlincote Police arrested him as he was sleeping in his car - finding a handgun with five rounds of ammunition, heroin and crack cocaine.

Marlon Dean, aged 28, of no fixed abode was found by officers in the vehicle which was parked on the A516.

Police approached the vehicle and discovered Dean who was wanted for domestic offences.

But a search of the vehicle found the gun, ammunition, drugs and money.

Swadlincote's Safer Neighbourhood Team gave more details on their Facebook page.

Their post reads: "Excellent work by the Swadlincote Group 1 officers who arrested suspect Marlon Dean, 28 of NFA, in his vehicle on the A516.

"Whilst on patrol the officers noticed the vehicle parked in suspicious circumstances and upon checking it identified it was associated to Dean who was wanted.

"They proactively approached the vehicle and identified that Dean was sleeping in it and arrested him for domestic offences.

"They searched the vehicle and located what has turned out to be a viable handgun with five rounds of ammunition in the magazine, heroin, crack cocaine, £1715 cash, scales and mobile phones.

"Dean has been dealt with by the Organised Crime Unit today (Wednesday) and charged with possessing a firearm, possessing ammunition, possession with intent to supply Cocaine, PWITS Heroin, possession of Cannabis, possession of a bladed article and possession of criminal property.

"Dean was remanded at Magistrates Court to appear at Crown Court at a later date.

"The Swadlincote officers approaching the vehicle were PC 15212 Dulku, 14721 Lewis, PC 15199 Brown and PC 2938 Wan.

"DC 2850 McCormack, DC 1676 Travers, DSI 17647 Kazi, DC 14038 Hockley and DC 14361 Barry worked over a 15-hour shift to get the job to CPS and charges authorised.

"This is what you call team work and another criminal off the streets of Swadlincote."
