Police have been issuing lockdown fines to visitors to Calke Abbey today (Thursday).

They say have been clamping down on people arriving at the South Derbyshire tourist attraction from places such as Nottingham, Leicester and Burton.

Officers say that more fines will be issued to those who do not stick to the Coronavirus lockdown rules.

The move follows police patrols this week in Ticknall where people have driven to and prompted complaints about problems with parked cars as well as crowds gathering in the area.

A post on the Swadlincote Safer Neighbourhood Team Facebook page today explained what has been happening at Calke.

It reads: "VISIBLE PATROLS AT CALKE ABBEY, TICKNALL.

"Officers from across South Derbyshire safer neighbourhood teams have been conducting proactive patrols at tourist attractions.

"Strong, effective engagement with visitors to these places has resulted in a number of fines being issued.

"You cannot travel from Nottingham, Leicester, Burton, you have to stay local to your area.

"Everyone is reminded to STAY HOME and follow current guidance.

"Despite the extremely cold weather conditions - below zero all day - a high profile presence was maintained.

"Please adhere to the rules or you will be fined. If you are unsure of the rules, please check this LINK.
