South Derbyshire police fined a van driver £200 for making a 250-mile round trip to pick up a wardrobe.

And then they spotted another motorist who had left home to play Pokemon Go on his phone.

The man travelled from London to Repton to collect the furniture.

And when quizzed by officers, he said he had 'forgotten' about the lockdown.

A post from both the Swadlincote and Melbourne & Mercia Safer Neighbourhood Teams explained what happened.

Their post reads: "Evening foot patrols are bread-and-butter duties for your local safer neighbourhood team.

"Officers take considerable satisfaction in keeping an eye out for suspicious individuals and vehicles during the chilly witching hours of their shifts.

"Yesterday evening, (Saturday 20 February), officers Bob and Finn observed a white van straddling a pavement in Repton village.

"With an inquisitive outlook, the officers approached the vehicle to see if the driver needed assistance.

"The motorist explained that he'd just picked up some furniture, including a second-hand wardrobe, from a property in the village.

"However, officers were stunned to discover the driver had embarked on an eye-watering 250-mile-plus round-trip from London to Derbyshire to collect his consignment.

"The driver acknowledged the non-essential nature of his outing, stating he'd forgotten about the national lockdown.

"He was handed a £200 fine for breaching current regulations.

"Officers continued patrolling the village but were soon alerted to a stationary vehicle secreted in a nearby car park. Their curiosity was heightened by an indistinguishable light shining inside the car.

"Eager to discover the source of the refulgent setting, officers approached the car and spoke to the driver.

"They were surprised to find a motorist not away from his home to get essential food or exercise, but instead playing the augmented reality mobile game, Pokémon Go, which requires participants to make journeys to different locations, often many miles apart.

"Officers explained that this constituted a non-essential journey and gave him a fixed penalty notice.

"The man was also reminded to stay at home, stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel to play with Litleo Lion and Pikachu in the darkness of car parks at night."
