Police are appealing for help after an incident in Swadlincote which left a 70-year-old cyclist with 'nasty' injuries - including a fractured skull.

Derbyshire Constabulary reports that the man was riding his bike at around 11am on Thursday, May 28, on Church Street over the roundabout at the junction of Civic Way and Derby Road.

"Something caused him to fall off the bike and we, along with our colleagues from East Midlands Ambulance Service, were called to the scene," say Police.

The incident is being investigated by officers from the nearby police station and they would like to speak to anyone who was there, or close, at the time and saw what happened or may have dashcam footage.

One of the investigating officers PC Rebecca Newbold said: "We know the island was quite busy at the time and we would like to speak to anyone who was there, knows anything about the incident or has dashcam footage.

"We would particularly like to speak to the drivers of two cars who stopped on the island and got out of their cars.

"A white man said to be in his late 50s with grey hair, who was driving a red car and a white woman, said to be in her 40s with dark brown hair in a pony tail, who was driving a silver car.

"The cyclist received a fractured skull and ribs as a result of the incident and whilst he is now recovering at home is also understandably shook-up.

"We would like to find out what happened and what caused him to come off his bike and so would urge anyone who knows anything about the incident or has dashcam footage to make contact with us."
