A Newhall shop has been closed down by Trading Standards for selling illegal cigarettes and concealing them in a seat behind the counter.

Swadlincote Police visited The Star in High Street to discuss the sale of illegal tobacco.

While they were looking around the shop, customers came in asking for cigarettes - and the shopkeeper said he did not sell them.

But a further search revealed the tobacco in the seat he was using in the shop.

The Swadlincote SNT Facebook page explained what happened next - and also makes reference to the BBC TV series Open All Hours.

Their post reads: "SNT joined forces with Trading standard officers to visit The Star shop on High Street, Newhall, regarding the selling of illegal tobacco.

"On arrival, the shop keeper was more than happy for the team to search, saying he does not sell cigarettes.

"What he should have said was "Granville, fetch a cloth!"

"The items in the shop were covered in dust and out of date, with electric wires hanging out from behind the shelves and no fire safety equipment.

"The Sergeant knew they were in for a good catch when he found a fishing rod.

"Whilst the search continued, customers still entered looking to buy illegal tobacco.

"PCSO Jackson then turned her attention to the hot seat the shopkeeper was sitting in...the shop keeper was sitting on the evidence!

"The team found illegal tobacco concealed within the chair.

"Selling the duvets was clearly a cover for the selling of illegal fake tobacco.

"The shop was closed by trading standards and the owners will be dealt with.

"Illegal tobacco is a problem because it funds organised crime in our community and can be contaminated with chemicals that cause serious health problems.

"More visits in Swadlincote are planned."
