An eye-catching graffiti mural at Newhall's The Royal Oak Boxing Club has been completed today (Thurs) and the man who commissioned the artwork is 'over the moon' with the finished piece.
The artwork features a boxing ring and gloves flanked by professional boxer the late Jack Bodell, who hailed from Swadlincote, and former British Army officer Captain Tom Moore, who raised more than £30m for NHS Charities Together in the run-up to his 100th birthday.
An NHS rainbow and a nurse's watch with angel's wings are additional flourishes paying tribute to the unsung heroes of the NHS.
George Balfour, who runs the club, commissioned the artwork created by Birmingham-based graffiti artist Andrew Mills, aka Title, of Graffiti by Title.
George told Swadlincote Nub News: "Andrew finished the mural at 2.30pm today and it's a real statement - attracting lots of people to come and have a look.
"It's absolutely fantastic, brilliant, it's unbelievable what that man can do with a spray can.
"I am over the moon with the finished work.
"It's the perfect tribute to two heroes and the NHS' amazing staff."
George paid for the artwork out of his own pocket.
"It cost a lot of money, but it's worth every penny.
"Andrew even generously knocked a bit off when he found out I was paying for it myself.
"I've also been contacted by people who have offered to donate towards the cost, which it very much appreciated."
The mural took graffiti artist Andrew, who turned his hobby into a full-time profession 12 years ago, around five days in total to complete.
Andrew will be returning to Newhall within a month to complete a second graffiti mural inside the gym, this time featuring the four men who have run the club since it first launched at The Royal Oak pub in 1961.
