Swadlincote Police have been handing out personal attack alarms to dog walkers following reports of animal thefts in the area.

But officers have also been trying to re-assure pet owners that there has not bee been an increase in dog thefts.

Swadlincote's Safer Neighbourhood Team said on their Facebook page: "Over the last few weeks there has been growing concern by the public about dogs going missing or being stolen in the area after a recent dog theft.

"Officers have been out today (Thursday) engaging with the public, predominantly dog walkers to re-assure them that there has not been an increase in dog thefts in the area. Police patrols are increasing on parks, especially at night.

"Officers also handed out personal attack alarms that walkers can activate if they ever feel in danger or at risk of anything happening to them."
