Runners and volunteers have been praised for their quick thinking to help a man in what has been described as a 'life threatening issue' at Conkers on Saturday morning.

The incident happened during the regular parkrun event at the centre in Moira.

An ambulance was called and the runner was taken to hospital in Derby.

An East Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman told Swadlincote Nub News: "We received a call at 9.33am on Saturday, February 5 to Moira.

"The caller reported a medical emergency.

"We sent a paramedic in an ambulance car and a crewed ambulance and transported one patient to Royal Derby Hospital."

Organisers have not issued an official comment on the incident.

But a social media post on the Conkers parkrun Facebook page gave an update on the man's condition - and added that it was an ICE (in case of emergency) number on his phone that allowed organisers to tell his wife what had happened.

The post said it had been a 'life-threatening issue' and added the man was now stable in hospital and undergoing tests.

But one post on the site from a doctor said that it was the actions of others at the time that helped the man.

She wrote: "We supported a runner with a life-threatening medical emergency.

"As the doctor on the scene, I was blown away by the quick-thinking, amazing collaboration and teamwork from runners and volunteers.

"Thank you all, this was a brilliant effort and I honestly can't say anything could have been done better or differently.

"It was like working with a team of fully trained professionals. Well done."

Conkers parkrun is described on its website as a free, fun, and friendly weekly 5k community event: "Walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate – it's up to you! Every Saturday at 9:00am."
