Swadlincote Police are urging carers, family members, friends or professionals who know someone who suffers from dementia to fill in a Herbert Protocol form.

This follows a weekend incident when an 87-year-old man called Peter went missing in Woodville.

Peter was found shortly in Burton after an appeal went out.

But now Swadlincote's Safer Neighbourhood Team want to take steps to make tracking dementia suffers should a similar incident re-occur.

The police met Peter on Saturday as his family wanted to say thank-you for finding him.

But Swadlincote SNT also posted a message which they hope people will find useful.

They said: "For anyone that has a family member or friend with dementia they will know the worry that goes along with the illness, to help us help you please fill in a Herbert protocol form via this link: Herbert Protocol Form.

"The Herbert Protocol is a national scheme being introduced by Derbyshire Constabulary and other agencies which encourages carers to compile useful information which could be used in the event of a vulnerable person going missing.

"Carers, family members and friends or professionals can complete the form in advance."

And Swadlincote SNT also posted details and photos of Peter's visit, adding: "Following our post yesterday regarding Peter who went missing from Woodville, and was later found in Burton the same day.

"Sgt Nizzer and Pcso Supervisor Wallington-Waite had the privilege of meeting Peter and his family for a catch up.

"Peter and his family wanted to say a heartfelt thank-you for all the support shown by the community yesterday and group 3 response officers and SNT who conducted a search for him.

"Peter was born in Albert village, worked as a lorry and bus driver, yesterday it had been arranged for Peter to have tea with a childhood friend. Whilst tea was being made Peter decided to go for a walk but did not return as expected.

"He was thankfully soon found safe and well and his family had decided to treat him to his lunch and invited us along for a chat."
