Swadlincote Police have condemned those involved in an incident on Thursday at a town centre lift - saying they were a 'waste' of two local emergency services.

Police and fire services had to go out to the pubic elevator at Morrisons because people were stuck inside after it stopped.

However, Swadlincote Safer Neighbourhood Team, in a Facebook post that evening, said the fault was caused by the people using the lift and 'jumping about'.

The occupants were eventually freed through the roof of the lift.

The post read: "This is what happens when you jump about in a lift, it stops and you're stuck in it for over two hours.

"Eventually rescued by fire service via a ladder through the hatch in the roof of the lift.

"Also a waste of two emergency services that had to attend this incident."

But locals have said the lift is notorious for being faulty and breaking down.
