Two off-duty Swadlincote police officers have been praised for helping to track shoplifters who had been caught in the act.

Their actions led to one arrest - with another one likely as a result.

Swadlincote Safer Neighbourhood Team posted the details on its Facebook page on Thursday.

They said: "Officer Edwards was off duty when he spotted a well-known shop lifter helping himself to some items and leaving a Swadlincote store without paying.

"The shoplifter was later arrested, charged and remanded.

"Officer Cross was off duty yesterday and whilst doing her shopping she spotted a shop lifter running from the store.

"She was soon involved in foot a foot chase with the offender who made off in a vehicle waiting nearby.

"Officer Cross was not very happy the offender had escaped, the officer did manage to get the vehicle registration, clear dash cam footage of the offender escaping with stolen items and store CCTV.

"He can expect an early morning knock on the door and we won't be taking him shopping."
