A Swadlincote football club has been found guilty and "appropriately penalised" by the FA after homophobic abuse was aimed at a player from Ashby United Community Football Club last summer.

Ashby United released a statement yesterday (Friday) saying the matter has been concluded.

The exchange happened last June in a match against Swadlincote-based side Springfield Sports Bar FC.

'Sustained' abuse against the Ashby player was said to have come from the touchline.

This is how we reported the incident in the summer Ashby United backed by opposition club after homophobic abuse was directed at player.

At the time, Springfield issued a statement which said: "On behalf of everyone at Springfield Sports Bar FC, we are shocked to hear the news that an Ashby United player was subjected to homophobic abuse at yesterday's game.

"We stand by Ashby and their player and will assist in any way possible to identify the individual involved."

But Ashby United said in a statement: "You may recall the statement in June, reporting an incident of homophobic abuse directed at one of our players during a match.

"We can report that the matter has been concluded.

"The club involved has been found guilty and appropriately penalised by the FA.

"The player who was subjected to the abuse is satisfied with the outcome and would like to thank Ashby United Community FC for the support provided during what has been a difficult period.

"There is no place for this or any other discriminatory abuse in football or in any sport.

"Ashby United continues to draw attention to homophobic abuse and is delighted to announce that the club will host a charity fixture in support of the Stonewall Rainbow Laces Campaign.

"The fixture will be held on Saturday, December 4, at Hood Park, kick off 1pm, please come down and show your support."
