An elderly woman was saved from being strangled by her own seatbelt after her car overturned in Moira.

Police from Swadlincote acted quickly to rescue the woman following the incident at Bath Lane.

Leicestershire Police, Fire & Rescue and East Midlands Ambulance Service were also on the scene of the crash which happened yesterday (Tuesday) at around 4pm.

But Swadlincote Safer Neighbourhood Team have released dramatic details of what happened in the minutes following the collision - along with photos of the car.

The SNT said: "After receiving a report of elderly female trapped in a vehicle and unable to breathe, Swadlincote officers arrived first at the scene as they were closer, while Fire and Rescue, EMAS and Leicester officers were also travelling.

"On arrival SGT Stafford and PC Young found the female trapped in the vehicle, suspended two metres from the ground by her neck with the seat belt wrapped round.

"The officers had to act quickly to prevent the driver from suffocating.

"PC Young held onto her from the skyward driver side window, climbing onto the side of the car.

"Sgt Stafford crawled in through the boot, onto the passenger seat and she was held up by him while the belt was cut releasing all tension around her neck.

"She was then extricated from the boot and onto a spine board with help from Fire and Rescue EMAS & Leicester Officers.

"The driver is stable and believed to be making a full recovery."
