A motorist told Swadlincote Police that UK laws did not apply to him as he was a Freeman of the Land.
The van was stopped in Woodville last week and officers had to smash one of the windows to get in as the driver refused to get out after 20 minutes of asking him to do so.
He had no insurance and the vehicle was siezed.
Swadlincote's Safer Neighbourhood Team explained more on their Facebook page.
They posted: "SNT officers Jamie and Sarah, were on late patrols in Woodville, when they spotted an uninsured van.
"The vehicle was stopped, and driver advised the vehicle was showing no insurance.
"The driver's reply shocked the officers.
"He said he was a freeman of the land, admitted he had no insurance and said he doesn't consent to UK laws so doesn't have to have insurance to drive his own car.
"He refused to get out of the vehicle.
"Sgt Stafford and his team arrived and try to engage and explain to the driver to get out of the vehicle for the next 20 minutes.
"The driver still refuses to get out. Baton out!
"Several warnings given to unlock the door and get out of the vehicle. Driver side window smashed!
"Driver arrested for obstruct police, no insurance under UK law. Van seized under UK law."
Sgt Tarj Nizzer said: "Let's hope he believes in the laws of the UK Courts!"
