Swadlincote Woodlands has secured a prestigious Green Flag Award for the first time.

The woodlands, owned by South Derbyshire District Council and Derbyshire County Council, has received the Green Flag Award from the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

The site is maintained by the District Council in partnership with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and the Conservation Volunteers.

This brings the number of South Derbyshire District Council parks and open spaces with a Green Flag Award to three.

Councillor Gordon Rhind, Chair of South Derbyshire District Council's Housing and Community Services Committee, said: "Swadlincote Woodlands really is a very special place - with more than 40,000 trees, you would never guess that it was once a landfill and open cast mining site.

"A Green Flag Award is very prestigious and a sign of good quality, well-managed green spaces. I am extremely proud that we now have three of these in South Derbyshire."

The other Green Flag sites in South Derbyshire are: Maurice Lee Memorial Park in Church Gresley and Eureka Park in Swadlincote.
