Police are stepping up patrols at Newhall Park after a fire was started deliberately at the base of a floodlight last night (Tues).

Swadlincote Police Safer Neighbourhood Team posted on Facebook this evening: "Last night a fire had been started deliberately at Newhall Park causing the fire service to attend and put the fire out.

"The fire was started at the base of a floodlight on the park which could have caused serious damage/injury if it hadn't been put out quickly.

"Please have a chat with your kids about the consequences of starting fires and the resources that are used for this mindless act.

"Patrols will be increased in the parks by our SNT and response officers.

"We will soon be knocking on the doors of the ones responsible."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information can call 101 quoting reference 20*486783.
