South Derbyshire District Council meets next week to decide whether to allow the development of almost 200 homes on an allocated residential site in Swadlincote.

Bellway Homes East Midlands is seeking to go-ahead to build 189 properties within the residential allocation known as Broomy Farm near Swadlincote - between Woodville and Hartshorne - which was formally arable land, reports Insider Media.

The proposed development would consist of a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom properties, with 57 of them allocated as affordable housing.

Out of these 57 dwellings, 75 per cent would be for social rent and 25 per cent would be for shared ownership.

The applicant has said that the scheme has the potential to create 294 construction jobs and 588 in the supply chain.

A statement filed on behalf of the applicant with South Derbyshire District Council – whose planning committee meets on May 11 – said: "This development would make an important contribution to the achievement of the district's housing requirement particularly as the site falls within a housing allocation and therefore has already been deemed suitable for residential development."

A council document published ahead of the meeting said: "Despite the increase in the number of dwellings at the site, the proposed development would maintain the same level of design and visual character as the other phases of Broomy Farm and there would be no recognised increase in the density of the development in order to accommodate the proposed development."
